Simon Hunt, the chief financial officer of HDI Global since 2022, has taken over as permanent chief executive of the insurer’s UK and Ireland division, a move that aligns with the rollout of the company’s four‑year Xcelerate29 strategy.

Leadership transition ties into new strategy

HDI Global announced in January that Stephanie Ogden would leave for a role at Munich Re, prompting a quick search for a successor. Hunt, who joined the firm in 2019 as finance and operations director for the UK, was first appointed interim chief executive in February 2026 and confirmed in June.

In an interview with the outlet, he said the timing was “idyllic” because the Xcelerate29 plan launched at the start of 2026. He noted that he participated in senior‑level workshops that shaped the strategy in the summer of 2025, allowing him to ensure the UK and Ireland unit’s objectives matched the broader vision.

UK and Ireland as a core hub

HDI UK and Ireland writes about €1.3 billion (£1.12 billion) in gross written premium and employs roughly 450 staff, making it the insurer’s largest division outside Germany. Hunt described the region as a “core hub” whose performance is essential to the global business.

The Xcelerate29 framework rests on three pillars: focused international expansion, operational excellence in underwriting, claims and investment expense, and a people‑centric culture. He emphasized that profitable growth—measured through underwriting discipline, service quality and employee engagement—is the metric the UK and Ireland team must drive.

Ultimately, Hunt said profitability across the cycle will be the decisive measure of Xcelerate29’s success, and while he declined to share exact GWP growth targets, he confirmed they are central to his performance agenda.

He believes that a flat structure—where anyone can approach anyone—builds trust, which he sees as essential for delivering results and building long‑term client relationships.

Given the firm’s ambition to expand its product suite, his focus on multi‑line solutions could help HDI UK and Ireland deepen existing client ties while attracting new business across sectors.

From a broader perspective, the emphasis on a single regional hub to drive a global strategy carries both opportunity and risk. If the UK and Ireland operation can sustain its growth trajectory while maintaining underwriting discipline, it could become a replicable model for other markets. Conversely, any shortfall in profitability may pressure the group to recalibrate its expectations for Xcelerate29, especially as market conditions evolve.

As HDI Global continues to roll out its plan through 2029, the performance of its “core hub” will remain a focal point for investors and regulators alike, with Hunt’s leadership under close observation.
