Zedra names Dan Whincup Client Director

Zedra, a global provider of trust and corporate services, has appointed Dan Whincup as Client Director to strengthen its independent trustee offerings for pension schemes.

Demand for experienced trustees grows

Kim Nash, Managing Director at Zedra, said the company has seen sustained demand for independent trustee services as schemes prioritize experienced support, long-term partnerships and trusted decision-making that delivers better member outcomes. Clients increasingly prefer partners with experience across a wide range of arrangements.

Zedra’s work spans a broad mix of schemes across sizes and types, giving the firm a perspective it applies to help employers, schemes, and members. Nash said this breadth and depth of experience sets Zedra apart, allowing it to apply insight from across the market to inform better outcomes.

Whincup brings decades of pension expertise

Whincup joins Zedra after 11 years at Coal Pension Trustees, where he served as Chief Pensions Officer for two of the UK’s largest and most complex schemes—the Mineworkers Pension Scheme and the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme. His role included overseeing strategic funding, investment collaboration, pension administration, and member communications.

Before that, he spent 14 years as an actuarial consultant at firms including PwC, Willis Towers Watson, and Mercer. Nash said Whincup’s background in member experience and scheme oversight will add further strength to Zedra’s collective expertise.

Whincup said member outcomes have always been central to his approach, with a focus on engagement, retirement planning, and the overall pension experience. He chose Zedra because the firm places members at the heart of its work while combining the scale, expertise and resources to support schemes of all sizes with a personal, relationship-driven culture.

“They combine the resources to support schemes of all sizes with a genuinely collaborative environment,” he said. “That balance made it a strong fit.”

Zedra’s expansion of its trustee services comes as pension schemes face increasing pressure to deliver better outcomes for members. The appointment reflects a broader trend of firms bringing in specialized talent to support clients in an evolving market.

Whincup’s experience with large, multi-employer schemes may offer a useful model for smaller arrangements looking to improve governance. His focus on member engagement could also help schemes struggling with participation or communication.

The shift toward independent trustees reflects a maturing approach, with firms like Zedra positioning themselves as strategic collaborators rather than just service providers.

As the pensions industry evolves, schemes are prioritizing long-term partnerships and expertise. By investing in professionals like Whincup, Zedra aims to support clients in handling these changes.
